Directives
Directives in architxt are hard rules you write to shape what the system remembers and how it answers. A directive is a short Name plus a Statement — for example, “Always capture data flows as separate facts” or “Never invent entity aliases that are not in the source text.” Directives can be active or inactive, have a priority, and can be tagged.
They map to Hindsight's directives concept and are enforced as hard rules during Reflect.
Creating and managing directives
Open the Directives page from the main navigation. The page lists every directive with ID, Name, Statement, Active, Priority, Tags, Generated By, and creation time.
You can:
- Click Add to create a directive. A Name and Statement are required; Active defaults to on and Priority defaults to
0. - Click Import to paste a CSV of directives. The optional header is
directive_name,directive_statement; optional columns includeis_activeandpriority. - Select one or more directives and click Delete to remove them.
- Search by name, statement, generated-by source, priority, or tag.
Click a directive row to open Directive Details and edit its name, statement, active state, priority, and tags.
Active vs inactive
Only Active directives are sent to Hindsight. Inactive directives stay in architxt but do not participate in retention or reflection. Use this to draft or temporarily disable a rule without losing it.
Priority
Priority is a numeric ordering hint. Higher numbers sort earlier. Use it when two directives might conflict or when one rule should be considered before another.
Tags
Directives can be tagged like documents and mental models. Tags are useful for grouping rules by domain, project, or severity. Select one or more directives and click Tags to add or remove tags in bulk.
Where directives are used
Directives are pushed to Hindsight memory banks as part of the bank's directives configuration. Once there, they act as hard rules for Reflect: the model must follow them when generating answers, and they influence how facts are extracted and observations are formed.
You sync directives from the Hindsight page, alongside documents, entities, mental models, and bank settings.

Directives are global rules. They do not belong to a single document, but they travel with the bank configuration and apply every time the bank retains content or answers a Reflect query.
Summary
Directives let you write explicit rules that govern extraction and reflection. Keep them active, ordered by priority, and tagged so they reach the right Hindsight banks and shape answers the way you intend.
